How much AI customer support actually costs in 2026: per ticket, per conversation, per agent
The short answer, as of September 2026: AI customer support for an online store costs $0.40 to $1.50 per resolved ticket or conversation in usage fees, on top of platform fees that run $10 to $900 a month. Fully managed options run $500 to $3,000 a month fixed. A human agent at the US median wage costs roughly $1.85 to $2.80 per routine ticket. Every number in that sentence comes from a published source, dated below.
That is the honest summary. The rest of this page is the arithmetic behind it, because in this category the sticker price and the invoice are rarely the same document.
The four ways vendors charge
Almost every offer you will see fits one of four models. Knowing which one you are looking at is most of the comparison work.
- Per-conversation add-on. You pay a helpdesk subscription, then a fee for each conversation the AI resolves. Gorgias AI Agent works this way.
- Flat platform fee plus usage. A monthly floor plus a per-conversation rate on top. Siena works this way.
- Resolution bundles. A monthly price that includes a package of resolved tickets, with overage beyond the package. Yuma’s Shopify listing works this way.
- Managed fixed fee. One monthly price for a stated case volume, everything included: setup, training, tuning, and a human accountable for the output. That is how Loqum prices.
Per-agent (per-seat) pricing is the old helpdesk model. It still exists for humans but is disappearing from AI offers, because an AI is not a seat.
The published rates, in one table
Verified against vendor pages, Shopify listings and independent teardowns on September 4, 2026. Prices change; check the source before you sign anything.
| Option | Published cost model | Minimum / floor |
|---|---|---|
| Gorgias (helpdesk) | $10–$900/mo by ticket volume; overage $0.32–$0.40/ticket | $10/mo |
| Gorgias AI Agent | $0.90/resolved conversation on annual plans, $1.00 monthly; AI overage ~$1.50 | Helpdesk plan required |
| Siena | ~$750/mo platform fee + $0.90 per automated conversation | ~$750/mo |
| Yuma AI | $850/mo Small Merchant, $1,200/mo Medium (Shopify listing); ~$0.74 per fully resolved ticket by their own comparison pages | $850/mo |
| eesel AI | $0.40 per ticket handled | None |
| Intercom Fin | $0.99/resolution (general helpdesk, not e-commerce-specific) | 50 resolutions/mo |
| Zowie | Enterprise contracts, reported around $34k/yr | Enterprise |
| Tidio Lyro | Free tier with 50 Lyro conversations, then per-conversation plans | Free tier |
| Loqum | $500/mo up to 350 cases; $1,000/mo up to 850; $3,000/mo up to 4,000. Managed: we build, train and run it | $500/mo |
Doing the division on our own rates, since nobody else will do it for you: the $500 plan is $1.43 a case, the $1,000 plan is $1.18, and the $3,000 plan is $0.75. Those are cases per month, and past 4,000 a month we will tell you we are not the right provider.
The fine print that moves the invoice
The headline rate is where comparison shopping starts, not ends. Four clauses do most of the damage:
- Double billing. Gorgias AI resolutions also count as billable helpdesk tickets. The $0.90–$1.00 conversation fee sits on top of your plan’s ticket consumption, so heavy AI use pushes you into a higher helpdesk tier. The real per-conversation cost is the AI fee plus your plan’s per-ticket cost.
- Billed resolved or not. Some per-conversation fees only charge for conversations the AI fully resolves (Gorgias, Yuma). Others bill automated conversations more broadly. Ask the question directly: what exactly counts as a billable conversation, and what happens if a human touches it later? Gorgias, for example, rebills as a regular ticket if a human joins within 72 hours.
- Overage rates. The rate inside your bundle is not the rate past it. AI overages run to $1.50; helpdesk overages $0.32–$0.40. Peak season is exactly when you find out what overage means.
- Your own time, unpriced. DIY tools bill you $0 a month for setup, training, policy-writing and tuning. That work is real and it lands on somebody’s calendar. It is fine to choose DIY; it is not fine to pretend the calendar is free.
The human baseline, so the comparison means something
Published numbers only. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median customer service representative at $21.53 an hour (May 2025). Loaded cost (taxes, benefits, tooling, a share of overhead) is commonly 1.25 to 1.4 times the wage, so call it $27 to $30 an hour in reality.
A routine ticket (where is my order, how do returns work) takes about four to six minutes including reading, answering and context switching. The arithmetic:
- $28/hour ≈ $0.47/minute
- 4 minutes → $1.88; 6 minutes → $2.82
So the honest framing of the whole market: AI support now bills $0.40–$1.50 per routine ticket against a human cost around $1.85–$2.80 for the same ticket. The discount is real but not free: someone still has to write the policies the AI answers from, own the mistakes, and answer the tickets it cannot.
What it costs by store size
The right answer changes with volume. Honest bands:
- Under ~150 cases a month. Saved replies, a strong FAQ page and a tracking link in every dispatch email will carry you. Cost: a few hours of writing, once. AI at this volume mostly buys anxiety.
- 150–350 a month. Hours are now visibly leaving your week. Managed starts at $500 (ours does; nobody else publishes a managed price this low). DIY per-ticket is cheaper on paper and the setup/tuning time is yours.
- 350–850 a month. Support is a real line item. Managed is $1,000; usage-based stacks platform fee plus conversation volume, and peak months spike the invoice.
- 850–4,000 a month. $3,000 managed, or an enterprise conversation with the vendors above. Past 4,000, we will happily say we are not built for you.
Definitions, because the words are doing the pricing
- Per ticket: you pay for every ticket handled, whatever handled means. Cheapest headline, widest definition.
- Per conversation: a conversation may span several messages before resolution. One conversation fee can cover a long exchange, or be charged several times over, depending on the vendor’s definition. Ask for it in writing.
- Per resolution: you pay only when the AI fully resolves the conversation with no human involvement. Highest per-unit rate, tightest definition.
- Per agent (per seat): the old model, price per human login. Increasingly irrelevant to AI offers; still what your human hires cost.
The honest bottom line
In 2026, AI support is priced like labor, in cost per case, because that is what it replaces. Shop for it the way you would hire: what does a routine case cost, who is accountable when it answers wrongly, and what does the invoice do in November. Anyone who cannot answer those three questions cleanly is not ready to be hired, including us, if that is where you land after reading our numbers.
We are Loqum. We build, train and manage AI teammates inside the helpdesk you already use, at the fixed prices in the table above, with a monthly call where a named engineer shows you what it handled and what it missed. If you want to pressure-test the arithmetic against your own store’s numbers, that conversation starts with Anna.
